Jacob Onkunya

Mr. Jacob Onkunya has an MBA from United States International University and a BA in Economics from the University of Nairobi. He is Founder and Director of Onkunya & Associates (East Africa) Limited, a Regional Management consulting firm with demonstrable competence in Human Resource Management including Job Evaluation, Staff Performance Management Systems, Strategic Planning, HR Policy Development, Projects

Mr. Onkunya’s experience includes: consulting for the International Labor Organization (ILO) as specialist/consultant on short-term assignments on productivity measurement and improvement, strategy and performance management for Chief Executive Officers and Senior Managers of Public and Private Sector organisations in the African continent (members of Employers’ Associations) – Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi etc.

As Sector Lead/Expert to Kenya’s Civil Service Job Evaluation (in partnership with PKF in 2015), Mr. Onkunya was tasked with project oversight and supervision that involved the vetting of data collection tools/manuals for appropriateness, ensuring quality of process outputs, guiding job analysis and evaluation process/outputs, harmonization of job grading structure for Kenya Civil Service, approving sector reports presented to the Commissioners of the Salaries and Remuneration Commissioners (SRC).

Mr. Onkunya was contracted by the World Bank on behalf of Salaries Remuneration Commission to conduct an assignment on “Improving Performance Management and Productivity for Kenya’s Public Sector to mitigate rising wage bill (2019).

Mr Onkunya led and facilitated Faculty at the Kenya School of Government in the development of a Modular Training Programme on Productivity Measurement and Performance Improvement for Inhouse training of Kenya’s Public Sector employees to improve quality of service and performance.

Mr. Onkunya was appointed a Member of the Board of Management of the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) and Chairman of the RBA Board Committee on Audit and Risk Management.

Mr Onkunya worked as Efficiency and Costing Manager at Bata Shoe Organization-Kenya and Productivity/Efficiency Trainer for other companies in the Africa region (12 years) and thereafter became Head of Consulting/Executive Selection at the Federation of Kenya Employers – FKE (17 years). Mr. Onkunya is a practicing member of the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM). He was decorated Head of State Commendation (HSC) by the President of the Republic of Kenya, 2005 in recognition of contribution to Staff Performance Management and Productivity.
